Passion of a Caster

What does it means to you, when I say passion.

For me passion means the surrounding emotion. And the inability to control the overflowing emotion. It's an energy that flows in my veins to materialize my emotion. To grasp that emotion, to put it to work and motion. A positive surge of accomplishment and personal accolade.

It shapes who I am today. The fuel that fire's and shapes my inspiration. Opens me up for opportunities and changes surrounding me.
It's enthusiasm and excitement for life.

And for me my passion is when I cast my line out. Give life to that inanimate object, entice the strike from the fish.

But above all... Passion comes to me when I didn't get that strike. The days I did not get a hook up, that day... My passion soars high.

When I fail to hook up a fish, or entice the fish to believe the fly I'm wiggling and stripping in, is alive... Passion comes and hits me abound.
What do I do at such situation?

First, I calm my self and my senses. I start looking around... There I spot a ripple in the water. Is that a fish? Playing subsurface? Or is that a structure obstructing the flow of the water? How I did not notice it earlier?

I strip my fly in, I pull up the leader. I check on my knot. How is that knot holding up. Is there a unnecessary bump in that knot. Is the knot well tied. Did I practice the knot enough? Can I spot the weakness in my knot? How can I tie it better?

Ahh, the wind.. It's fresh air, intermixed with the salty taste of the ocean. The breeze is kind of strong, but assuring.

This, my friends... Is passion for me. When I put myself out and look at the serenity and the beauty of my surrounding. When I get in tune with my knot, with my fly selection, the choice of color or patterns. This is when I'm truly passionate about what I do.

And the uplifting of my passion comes when I get that strong tug on the end of my line... And I savior the fight of the moment. And, at the end of the fight.. When I snap a few memorable picture to be shared, and release the master of the water back to his abode to fight again another day. That my friend is when I'm at the pinnacle of my passion..

The passion is not when you get the fish.. But the before and after the fish.

If I did not get a fish today, I'll introspect, identify and analyze.. Be prepared better for the next time. The passion is in being ready and immersing yourself for the sport.

And when I get back home at the end of my fishing day, I hear a beautiful voice coming from my beautiful home.... Acha acha... What fish you caught today!!

And at that moment, my passion turns towards my family life. And the passion to share my story with my eager to know daughter.. That's when I realize and thank God for the days I have on this earth.

Passion may be something else for others, everyone have a view of what passion is, below i give some personal view of ICasters' Working Committee member on the;

What, Why, When and How of passion for them:

IAN PETERS
"
I have always been interested in the cast. I have always wanted to cast further with less effort. My first set up was a 7'UP can.. 30 lbs line rolled on it and a spark plug for weight....i learnt from a kind Malay uncle who taught this Indian boy to cast well and fast.

To cast efficiently and to the feel the line flowing out was n addiction..to hear the line unravel and to feel the kinetic energy flow out from my muscles was unbelievable.

So i progressed from a tin can to a spinning set. Just a bamboo rod and then a BC.

All cast that's made, are all a searching for that feel...yes the line went out but there was something missing.
A missing of energy..of feeling of synergy. .one with the rod and line...
Yes I could feel the lure hiss out but that was all..
Yes the hit of the fish and we fought it...but, There was something missing.

Then i picked up my first fly rod..and immediately i was that small 5 year old boy standing by the straits of Johor fishing.
The movement of the fly line...the loading of the fly rod in it's casting arc..
I was literally brought to tears...
So i cast my passion...i learn to throw a weighted line.. I succeed most of the time. but i need to cast. I need to feel this everyday.

But my life robs me of my only joy...robs me of my passion. ..i need to break free...even just to stand in a field..to cast. To feel the loading. .the movement of the line..the kinetic energy. .flowing through my fingers through my very soul..."

Talking about passion..

when I started fishing at 4 years old..

my level of excitement when going for fishing never been down..till today if I have plan to go fishing in the morning, I won't sleep the whole night because, I can't.."Laughing out loud"..

There were days where I failed to even get a nudge on my bait for 4 months at pay pond..

Everyday I would go and try new flavors and bait..but nothing works..at times i would run out of cash. At those times,  I would sell old newspapers just for fishing, eventhough I knew, I still may not get a nudge on my bait...

I seriously cant figure out what makes me to do that, but this is what passion is all about I guess.."

"
I started at a very young age, probably 11. Stealing  fathers hook n line, fish behind the house secretly !Priceless

My priceless moment was, me and a few buddies, went fishing, but with a barricade net. You set the net, you get into the water and you chase the fish towards the net. Caught rice sacks full of Puyu (Anabas Testedineus), Sepat (Perch), haruan (Channa Striata). Came back home proudly after dividing the fish among buddies. Get whacked for it's a dangerous endeavor with massive cane.
But my mother still cleaned the fish and fried them for me. Priceless..."

I started with Haruan (Channa Striata)...
Still stuck with Haruan (Channa Striata)...
Nothing stirs my soul like Haruan (Channa Striata) though...
In love with that fish.

The best type of fishing in my opinion....
the feeling you get seeing a arrow like movement homing in on your bait. That's priceless.."

My first experience was when I bought a RM 20 rod and reel. This was in Port Dickson. We were on a family holiday, with my cousins etc.

We sneaked out of the crowd. Me and my cousin Bro was fishing Illegally at a resort lake.

Baited with worms dug-up at nearby ground. Cast my first line. Caught a small Keli (Cat Fish). Released it. Cast the second time.  Out of sudden a loud sound. My rod broke in pieces. Fight was hard and strong. I have to use my hand to reel In the fish.
Took close to 10mins.
Landed a 5-7kg African Catfish.

It was a the most awesome and extreme adrenaline rush I felt.
From that day onward, I knew I was born to fish.

But I had my orgasm when I cast a BC for the first time.
Even with the crazy birds nest, and wind knot's.
Wasted lines.
Never gave up.
Kept my spinning at home. Went fishing with a group.
No strikes a few times because my lures were out of the water due to birds nest.

Then finally one day, after numerous practice rounds.
Got a good cast, albeit in the fields.
The feeling of a good cast, just over power's your emotions."

So, what's passion to you? dear readers...

How to be a sifu?

Even Datoship we can buy but the term sifu is only for anglers who has deep knowledge about fishing and never hesitate to guide others. This article actually is about how to become a good angler. Everyone wants to be a good angler. It doesn't matter what type of fishing. So let me give some tips from my own observation.

1) Equipments

Yes equipments. Some of you might think only experience is enough to become a sifu. You are totally wrong. How are we going to teach others when our tackle box doesn't even have a pliers, cutter, leader or etc? Imagine us bringing some friends new to fishing. We can't aspect them to bring all these equipments (most probe they will bring only rod n reel).Take an example of my sifu Zai. When I met him 8 years ago I need to rely much on him because I don't have enough equipment. Even till today u can see a mini tackle shop inside his tool box. Everything is there and well organized. Leading by example is a perfect example of a sifu and not just tunjuk power.

Example of casting equipments that we should have for casting fishing.
(Thank you Mathew Mahen Kumar for this picture)

2) Knots

An angler's expertise and experience not only judged by his catches but also his knots. There are some many types of knots (more than hundred of knots) but it doesn't mean we need to know all the knots. If we can tie 10 types of knots that's already good enough. Every time I learn a new knot I will practice it nothing less than 100 x before trying it during a fishing session. I have seen some really good and neat knots from my friends itself. Their knots were even better than mine. As an example my friend Mathew's Albright knot, Lan lubuk's TLL knot and Thava and boy@bfw angler's fg knot. Their way of tying a knot seriously impressed me and I'm pretty sure there are many anglers with great handwork of tying a knot. Once you master your knots you are ready for criteria no 3.

Few tutorial videos for our guidance:

3) Experience

When your equipments is complete and your knots are good then its time to find real experience. An experienced angler knows the fish behaviors, correct tackle setup, specific bait/lures for specific type of fishes and of course water craft. During my days at pay ponds I can just differentiate fishes just by the looking at the bubbles. Rohu, grass carp, big head carp, pacu and catfish has their way of releasing bubbles. 1 more tips- if you want to know the deepest point of a lake/pond just checkout for patin’s heavy boiling spot. Like my sifu Mathew he can easily predicts snakehead’s behavior just by looking at the water condition and movements. That shows the angler’s experience. How we practically use our knowledge from articles and magazines is the main ball game. When we concentrate in all these the fish will come by itself. A wise man told me once. Don't cast your lure to get fish. Just concentrate your lure presentation and the fish will come to you. Same goes to my final message don't fish to become sifu but fish to get experience and a lot fun and the title sifu will come to you. Even sifus still learning:)

I dedicate this to all my sifus especially to Zai pacak Bfw tll, Mathew mahen Kumar, Vimalan krishnasamy, Selvakumar Arunasalam and BFW Angler for guiding me to be a good angler:)

From Live Frogs to Buzz Baits

Live frogs and striped snakeheads. Like 90 percent of all Indian anglers, I too came from the orthodox haruan casting community. Being born and raised in a small town with no more than two inaptly equipped tackleshops that had no artificial lures and no rod and reel setups below 20lb didn’t help either in exposing me to the world of sport fishing. Then came Kampar where I moved to pursue my tertiary education. Although an entire new playing ground of giant snakeheads and peacock bass were opened to me I still lacked proper guidance and information and stumbled to find my footing in art of lure casting. Until of course I was accepted into this little group known as Icasters. Total gamechangers. From ultralight addicts to baitcaster enthusiasts and passionate flyfishing purists this group has it all. Every individual in this group has made a huge contribution in my fishing progress and I am forever thankful and grateful for that.

The satisfaction of deceiving a fish to take a lure and the total adrenaline rush that takes place once a strike occurs and the fight starts is unparalleled. It is the single most precious moment that I look forward to on every fishing trip. My uttermost favorite type of lures are topwaters lures namely buzzbaits. The setup that I currently have my buzzbaits rigged on to is a majorcraft goemotion 5-14lb rod with 15lb braided line on a daiwa tatula -100HL 6.3.1. Many baitcaster users recommend a hyperspeed reel with 7 or 8 or even higher gear ratios but personally I find that 6.3.1 is aptly suited for my choice of buzzbaits and topwater frogs. As for rods I would suggest something that is recommended to handle the weight of the buzzbait that is intended to be used (I use a 5-14lb rod because the choice of my buzzbaits are at most 11grams in weight). As most buzzbaits are in the 30g range a rod with a maximum line weight of 20lb would be appropriate.

Accuracy and distance is very important when presenting buzzbaits. More often than not more water covered equals more strikes. Buzzbaits are effective particularly in the morning and evening when predators lurk near the bank looking for prey. Buzzbaits mimic the actions of panicking bait fish thus provoking a strike. Besides strikes from hungry predatory fish, buzzbaits also induces reaction strikes. This is another reason why I prefer buzzbaits. When fish aren’t in the mood to feed and don’t touch any other lure buzzbaits normally work. Reason for this is that when a buzzbait streaks across the surface an amplitude of vibration and sound is made by the blades and the clacker which irritates and catches the attention of any nearby fish and most predatory fish (snakeheads, giant snakeheads ,large bass) strike instantaneously when a buzzbait cruises past them. Buzzbaits are exceptionally effective towards snakeheads because snakeheads tend to strike at anything that intrudes into their territory (snakeheads are extremely territorial).

There are two type of presentation that I focus on when I am throwing buzzbaits. Primary presentation is when surface action is spotted. This surface fish activity could be either giant snakeheads rising for air or peacock bass boiling when feeding on baitfish. Target the buzzbait and cast it over the boiling or rising and streak it across. In the case of no strikes repeat with varying speed. Second type of presentation focuses on structures found throughout the habitat of the target species. In the case of striped and giant snakeheads, they like to lurk around wooden submerged trees or on the edges of floating vegetation. Casting and retrieving buzzbaits along these structures can often yield a positive result. The speed of the retrieve when targeting these structures should be slow. Crank to just turn the blades and keep the buzzbait on the surface. These slow oscillations create deep rumbling that acts as a beacon for large aggressive snakeheads. Hitting the structures with buzzbaits as it is being retrieved can further increase the probability of a strike.

As for the types of buzzbaits available the sky is the limit. Most designs have their own advantage and disadvantages.

Diagram 1

I reserve the type of buzzbait seen above in diagram 1 for usage on open water with overhanging vegetation growth from the bank and submerged tree trunks. Creates a loud rattling clacking sound and displaces a large amount of water perfect for a loud presentation. Primary target giant snakeheads but I have caught striped snakeheads and peacock bass with this. Disadvantage is the shape is inefficient aerodynamically and casting it is hard and requires practice.

This particular buzzbait is fairly easy to cast and can be presented even in shallow water or moderate cover areas with the occasional lily pads. Spits moderate amount of water and creates a whirling sound making for a more subtle presentation that is perfect for striped snakeheads.

Pancing Layang Cuti Raya

Floating polyarn bread fly
Olive wolly bugger
Deer hair pallet fly

Kerapu naga bukan calang2 ikannya.

 gewang Storm Wild Eye

 gewang Ratlling Rapala berwana silver
Swivel and split ring digalakkan.
